Focus and Scope

Affirmations: of the modern is an open access journal seeking to publish the best and most innovative work in the study of modernist cultures. We work hard to publish work quickly, online, while under the strict conditions of double-blind peer review. In an increasingly crowded field, Affirmations stands up for more openly theoretical and political work, and places an emphasis on interventions and occasional polemics. Previous issues have included work by a mix of eminent and emerging scholars, on a very wide range of topics. We welcome submissions from authors at all levels of employment, and indeed from outside the university sector, provided the work is compelling, original, and scrupulously executed. We encourage work on people and places outside the hegemonic centres of modernist culture, and especially from women, people of colour, and working-class intellectuals.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publically available.

Special collections of articles are welcomed and will be published as part of the normal issue, but also within a separate collection page.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

Archiving Policy

The journal’s publisher, Open Humanities Press, focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

Our thanks for the ongoing technical and administrative support.

Affirmations: of the modern was established in 2013 under the auspices of the Centre for Modernism Studies in Australia. An international advisory board was assembled and the editorial board fixed. Since 2016, after the disestablishment of the Centre, the journal has been run out of the School of the Arts and Media, UNSW Sydney, with significant support from the UNSW Library.
